REPAIR MANUAL

What should you try first when the game fails?

Start with the smallest reversible fix: verify files, restart after shader compilation, and use the launch option named for your renderer. The answers below separate launch, save, trophy, and display problems.

  • Game install ~38 GB; ~45 GB with HD texture pack DLC.
  • Cloud saves overwrite local on next launch; turn off cloud sync to preserve a newer local save.
  • Saves trigger on every in-game day change and at every chapter transition.
  • 8–12 save files per playthrough.
  • Verified against The Blood of Dawnwalker patch 1.0.4 (2026-08-21).
Crash on launch — "Vulkan renderer initialization failed"

Force DirectX 11: open Steam Properties, add `-dx11` to Launch Options, then relaunch. The Vulkan renderer path has a known issue on certain AMD drivers as of patch 1.0.4.

Steam Deck — fan runs loud, battery drains fast

Set the FPS limit to 30 in Steam Deck settings and keep the in-game frame cap at 30. The game targets 60 on the Deck by default, which the APU cannot sustain.

My save is corrupted — can I recover it?

Find the most recent `.bak` file in your save folder and rename it to remove `.bak`. If that fails, fall back to a Steam Cloud version. The game keeps a rolling backup of the last three saves.

A trophy did not unlock

Check the trophy checklist. If it is missable and its window passed, it unlocks on a New Game Plus run that re-triggers the requirement.

Does the game support ultrawide monitors?

Yes, in 21:9 (2560×1080). 32:9 is not officially supported and the UI clips on the right edge.
