Quick answer

Coen is the protagonist of The Blood of Dawnwalker. He is a Dawnwalker — half-human, half-vampire — and his sister Esme is in the besieged city of Vale Sangora. Coen wakes at the start of the game's 30-day siege frame and must navigate the three boyar courts, the Vrakhir invasion, and the Anachora choice to determine which of seven endings the run ends on.

Key facts

  • Name: Coen (the protagonist).
  • Species: Human–vampire hybrid, called a "Dawnwalker".
  • Sister: Esme, located inside Vale Sangora at the start of the game.
  • Affiliation: None at the start. Coen can align with the city defenders, the Vrakhir, or neither, depending on the Anachora choice and the boyar court decisions.
  • Story role: Player character. Every major decision in the game is Coen's.

Why is Coen a "Dawnwalker"?

The label "Dawnwalker" is a game-world term for a half-human, half-vampire hybrid. It is not a class, not a faction, not a title — it is a biological state.

The in-game lore frames the Dawnwalker state as rare and unstable. Most hybrids do not survive infancy. Coen is one of the few who has, which makes him biologically interesting to the Vrakhir and politically dangerous to the city defenders. Both sides want him for different reasons.

The state gives Coen access to two skill trees — one for each form. Switching forms changes which skill tree is active, which perks are equipped, and which ending paths are still reachable.

How does the dual-form system shape the story?

Coen can shift between Vampire form and Human form. The two forms share an experience curve but have separate skill pools (Vampire perks and Human perks). Switching forms is not free — each switch has an in-fiction cost and a Corruption-level implication.

The dual-form mechanic drives three story decisions:

  1. Which form to use in combat — Vampire form favors aggression and Corruption gain; Human form favors stealth and Corruption stability.
  2. Which skill tree to invest in — Vampire perks unlock Vampirism ultimates at Corruption 15; Human perks unlock city-defense options.
  3. Which ending is reachable — Some endings require Corruption above 12; others require it below 8. The build calculator tracks both forms and flags endings as they become reachable.

The build calculator covers all three decisions in detail.

What role does Esme play?

Esme is Coen's sister. She is inside Vale Sangora at the start of the game. Her outcome is one of the variables that the chapter-close decision matrix checks.

The exact mechanics of Esme's outcome depend on player choices throughout the run. Some outcomes lock certain endings — losing Esme before chapter close makes the Dawn Bringer ending impossible, for example. The endings tracker covers each Esme-state × ending combination.

The Esme storyline is told through side quests and NPC interactions, not through a dedicated campaign. Players who skip the side content can still complete the game but will lock themselves out of endings that require a specific Esme outcome.

How is Coen different from other action-RPG protagonists?

Coen is not a chosen one. He is not prophesied. He is not the heir to a fallen kingdom. He is a half-vampire who woke up in a city that does not trust him, at the start of a siege he did not cause. The game's story framing emphasizes this ordinariness — Coen's special status comes from his biological state, not from any narrative prophecy.

This shapes how the seven endings read. Each ending is a different answer to the question: what does Coen do with the time he has? Dawn Bringer is the human-aligned answer; Night Sovereign is the vampire-aligned answer; Faded Memory is the answer when Coen refuses to engage; The Lost is the answer when Coen runs out of options.

Where does Coen start the game?

Coen wakes at the prologue. The opening cinematic shows Coen inside the walls of Vale Sangora, with the siege already underway. The first scene is the Anachora choice — a decision Coen must make on night one that affects which endings remain reachable for the rest of the run.

The Anachora choice is spoiler-layer; the dedicated story page covers it in detail.
