Quick answer

Vale Sangora is the walled medieval city at the center of The Blood of Dawnwalker. It is under a 30-day siege by the Vrakhir vampire clan led by Brencis. Coen wakes inside the city at the start of the siege, and the entire game takes place within or just outside its walls and surrounding regions.

Key facts

  • Type: Walled medieval city, primary setting of The Blood of Dawnwalker.
  • Population: Civilians, three boyar courts (Ambrus / Bakir / Xanthe), city guard, and Coen.
  • Threat: Vrakhir vampire clan under Brencis.
  • Defense: City walls, scouting towers (11 total, one per region around the city), and the city's three boyar-led militias.

What does Vale Sangora look like?

The city is a stone-walled medieval settlement. Its walls form the inner ring; outside the walls lie the ten regions that make up the playable map — Laslea Glen, Briar Sloughs, Maragir Wealds, Boar's Back, Svartrau Outskirts, Svartrau City, Rockfalls, St. Tyna's Grove, The Slits, and Tantari Woods.

The walls are not a single barrier. They form a connected defensive line with eleven scouting towers built into them or on the surrounding high ground. Each tower covers a wedge of the surrounding regions. Climbing a tower unlocks fast travel and the Bird's-Eye View trophy.

Inside the walls, the city is divided into districts aligned with the three boyar courts. Ambrus holds the north quarter, Bakir the east, Xanthe the south. The central plaza is shared civic space, including the herbalist's shop, the respec NPC's stall, and the Anachora's shrine.

Why is the city under siege?

The Vrakhir invasion is the central conflict of the game. Brencis, the Vrakhir leader, has raised an army of vampires and a siege force outside the city walls. The exact motivation is not fully revealed in the prologue — the player learns more through the three boyar court storylines and through side quests that intersect with Vrakhir patrols.

What the player knows from the start:

  • The siege started before Coen woke. The walls are already damaged in places.
  • The three boyars disagree about how to respond. Ambrus favors defense, Bakir favors counterattack, Xanthe favors negotiation.
  • Coen is caught in the middle. His half-vampire nature makes him suspect to the city defenders and interesting to the Vrakhir.

How does the 30-day frame work?

The 30-day frame is a narrative device, not a real-time clock. In-game time advances only when Coen completes a main-quest segment, a side-quest arc, or a named activity. The day counter updates at chapter transitions and at key NPC interactions.

The frame matters because it gives players a budget on side quests. If Coen spends too many segments on side content before pushing the main story, the chapter close triggers with too few perks unlocked. If Coen rushes the main story, he misses endings that require specific NPC outcomes.

What are the districts?

  • Ambrus Quarter (north) — military district. Ambrus is a former general. The quarter holds the training grounds, the smithy, and the respec NPC.
  • Bakir Quarter (east) — market district. Bakir is a former trader. The quarter holds the herbalist, the inns, and the side-quest givers.
  • Xanthe Quarter (south) — aristocratic district. Xanthe is a former noble. The quarter holds the court, the library, and the romance NPCs.
  • Central Plaza (shared) — civic space. Holds the Anachora's shrine, the respec NPC, and the herbalist.

How does Coen move through the city?

Coen has full access to all four districts and the surrounding ten regions. Fast travel between shrines is unlocked as Coen activates each shrine. There are 111 shrines total — 94 regular (which enable fast travel) and 17 destroyed (which require Heart items to restore).

The walls are passable at certain gates, and the scouting towers provide elevated views of the surrounding regions. Climbing all 11 towers is required for the Bird's-Eye View trophy and unlocks a final panoramic vista of the siege from above.

What happens at chapter close?

The chapter closes when Coen has spent enough segments on the main quest or has triggered the Brencis decision point. At chapter close, the game evaluates:

  • Coen's Corruption level (the hidden Vampirism stat).
  • Each boyar's allegiance state (hostile, neutral, allied).
  • The Anachora choice outcome (made on night one).
  • Esme's outcome (Coen's sister, who can be saved or lost during the siege).

The combination determines which of the 7 endings fires. The endings tracker covers each combination in detail.
